Website Review: The Movie Sounds Page
The Movie Sounds Page would seem to be all kinds of illegal, because it lets you download sound clips from about a hundred movies, mostly in .wav and .mp3 format. Indeed, the site runs the disclaimer:
All sound files are for educational, research, criticism, or review for movie purchase purposes.Since the site has been running for 10 plus years, I guess that must suffice.
The site has an annoying amount of ads cluttering an inelegant layout and the selection of movies is pretty narrow, although the clip content for the movies I checked out looked deep. Because clips are hosted on various servers beyond the control of the webmaster, it is apparently common that the downloads don't work at all.
Still, if you have to have that HAL9000 voice play when your computer makes an error message...
For actual sound effects for your movies, of professional quality, the book Audio Postproduction by Jay Rose recommends Sound Dogs. I haven't personally tried them yet, but when I do, you can be sure a website review will be forthcoming.
