Gregg Toland, Master Cinematographer

Unfortunately not available online, there is an excellent article in this week's New Yorker magazine about the man who shot Wuthering Heights and Citizen Kane: Gregg Toland.

It describes how Toland, one of the youngest professional cameramen, pioneered several techniques that we take for granted today -- not just in lighting, but in editing. He was able to visualize how a movie would cut together, and with the aid of deep focus photography, dollies and other camera movement, helped to make possible (and artful) 'long takes'.
