Variety: 3D is Here to Stay

The studios love them some 3D.

If the 3D future does come to pass, it is going to be tough for indies, at least initially. The cost of 3D production and post-production I've heard estimated at 2 to 4 times the cost of 2D. The studios know this. They also know they can charge more for the tickets.

There's still no promising solution for 3D at home, so it will be a while yet before all visual entertainment is consumed in 3D. And the studios using new digital 3D technology means there will be a vacuum in luscious film that braver indies can step into.

Can't wait to see how the double-Scarlet rigs work.

I just saw Bolt in 3D - looked great, but I don't think 3D technology can ever really excel until they the screen itself is no longer 2D!
